I have never been a believer with a UK coach not having experience. This is a tough gig! One that needs someone in the seat who can handle the fans, media and expectations.
Well, let's venture from that thought for a minute.
1.I think it is fair to say that due to OTS's lack of recruiting these next 2-3 years will be tough on the court for UK.
2.A coach is only as good as his staff. Again, see Tubby and his band of blind mice. A great staff can make a young coach look good.
3.Recruiting is the life blood of a program. Talent can make a young coach look good.
4. These next 2-3 years are going to be tough on the court whether fans want to face it or not.
So, is this the perfect opportunity for a John Pelphrey or Anthony Grant to get the UK job? I say why not?
Grant showed he could coach by beating Duke in the 1st round of the NCAA.
He has shown he can recruit! He was Billy D's main guy and helped bring in the nucleus of back-to-back NCAA Champions.
His team reminded me a lot of Mike Anderson's UAB teams with trapping and pressing all over the court for 40 minutes.
His offense had the fast break attacking style UK fans have been longing for the last 10 years.
Pelphrey gets consideration just for the mere fact he is a KY boy who was here during the transition from bad times to the climb back up the mountain.
He helped recruit Walsh, Lee and Roberson to UF.
John is a relentless worker on the recruiting trail. He might not get a kid but it won't be b/c he was outworked!
I saw USA 1-2 times this year and the played defense, pressed and got the ball up the court.
Again, these next 2-3 years are going to be tough. Does this give a young coach time to learn on the job? I personally like Grant more than Phelphrey.
He would need to hire an experienced associate coach like Jim O'Brien or George Felton. A coach with experience on the D1 level.
He needs an aggressive recruiter. A Grant or Pelphrey clone.
He needs someone who understands UK. Maybe Allen Edwards, Kyle Macy or Derek Anderson.
I don't think this would happen because I can't see the fan base buying it due to their "win now" attitude.
I do think with the right pieces it could work!!!!
