Coach Gillispie Call-in Show 3/3/08 Short Summary

Here's a short summary of tonights show. For those of you that didn't or couldn't listen. Here's the Link to Coaches Archive show. It should be up sometime Tuesday after noon.

This wont have as many caller question as several callers said and ask the same questions about the UK/UT game and Coach gave the same answer. Overall good show to listen too.

Player of the Week: Mike Williams, he's happy to be a Wildcat and is the 1st British to play for UK.

Gillispie's opening statement on South Carolina: Coach said USC has some good players and beat Auburn over the weekend. USC is a really good team and that UK barely beat them at Rupp. Cats will be in another tough game at USC Wednesday as its their finall home game and Coach Odom's last home game as well since he'll be retiring at the end of the season. Gillispie added that the Cats did practice today and the players went at it hard and want to win the rest of the games and the SEC Tournament.

Caller: Coach the way I see it the Cats should be the #1 seed in the NCAA so they can bring home #8.

Coach: We're on the same page there.

Caller: Coach how much do you look at a player when recruiting him? How much input do you put it when looking at a recruit? Caller mentioned a recruit along the lines of Lofton.

Coach: Shooting is big with the 3 pt line being moved back next season. Shooting is important, but if one can't defend, pass, rebound, make cuts then, set screens, etc. What does one do. But if one wants to play D-1 ball, best thing is to be able to shoot 3 pters.

Tom: Looked like UK was playing a Box and One some against Tennessee.

Coach: We were, but we didn't play it long Tom and I'll give you a pass as on that after as long as you've been around basketball.(Tom and Gillispie laughing)

Caller: Coach how are the seniors doing going into the final home game.

Coach: Well 1st UK plays South Carolina on Wednesday. Joe and Ramel are tough and great leaders for UK. Sunday will be a VERY SAD DAY for us when we say Good-Bye.. :'(

Caller: Coach just wish you the Best of Luck for Wednesday and Sunday. Also wanted tell everyone to come out and and cheer the seniors on and as they play their last game at Rupp.

Coach: Thank You and those comments sound good to me on Joe and Ramel.

Caller: Tough game Sunday and the guys left it on the floor and proud of the effort and the way they fought.

Coach: Thanks, we're happy with the effort and proud of the kids, but not the lose and we wanted the win.

Caller: Coach the players were great against Tennessee, but what allot of people over look is that you out coached them yesterday.

Coach: Thanks and we're not gonna back down or shy away from no one. We are on the right track and I want to hang at least one more banner in Rupp.

Caller: I agree with the other caller on you out coaching the other team. Coach I hope you stick around and hang several NCAA banners in Rupp over the next 20+ years.

Coach: Thanks, I cut myself off at one banner when I want to win several and add to the tradition at UK. Thats what we were brought here for and I plan on winning SEC and NCAA titles here at UK.

Caller: Ask why can't UK do a Blue out against Florida, instead of a white out like some of the other schools have done?

Coach: Tom you can be in charge of that.

Tom: UK did something along those lines last year when Florida came to Rupp by using white shirts to spell out CATS in the stands.

Tom gets a Kentucky/Florida Note: Windstream will provide shirts for the UK/UF game and UK will give out 10,000 white T-shirts for the game for a white out.

Caller: Coach you remind me of the "MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT" by telling it like it is, making no excuses and being honest and up front with the fans. I'm very proud of you and have your back as you come from a background along the lines of me.

Coach: Thank You Very Much.

Caller: Coach don't forget to look at the Indian boys when recruiting.

Coach: There's allot of good players there in Indiana this year and we're gonna find the recruits wherever they are so we can get them.

Tom: Mentions that Coach Odom and Coach Donovan said that Ramel Bradley should be considered for the SEC player of the Year with the way he takes charge at the end of the games.

Caller: Coach when we get in the NCAA this year, how do you think we'll do?

Coach: We'll back down from no one in the NCAA and we can beat anyone, no disrespect to those other teams.

Caller: Comments on Ramon Harris and Perry Stevenson on how they stepped up yesterday and said he was proud that they can play and did play great. Also asked about Mark Coury getting a scholarship.

Coach: You seen yesterday, what I see in practice from these guys. As for Mark Coury NOT being on scholarship, the last staff had a agreement with Mark on the scholarship last spring and once he came off he can't return to a scholarship per NCAA rules. Coach tried to get Mark a scholarship this season, but couldn't, because of the rule. Coach added that they'll do everything they can to help Mark and other players with getting their education.

Coach: Had a few mins and wished Tom a Happy Birthday. Gillispie is laughing and says, Tom whys your face getting so red? Both are laughing.

Last Caller: Ask why can't or doesn't UK swap seats with the visiting teams, so the visitors will be on top of the Erupption Zone and if it was a SEC rule?

Coach: I don't know if its a SEC rule, but I believe the UK AD would hear it from the season ticket holders. Coach went onto to say UK should do it like Vanderbilt's home gym and added that when Vandy comes to Rupp Arena they can be put in the upper section of Rupp. (Both Tom and Gillispie start laughing as the show is going of the air.)

Overall good show to listen too.
